Hawks Baseball Opens Up the Season 1-4

Two weeks after opening the regular season the College of Southern Maryland Hawks Baseball Team sits at 1-4.
The Hawks started the year off splitting a doubleheader at home on February 10th against Delaware Technical Community College.
Delaware Tech Game 1:
Delaware Tech took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. CSM would respond in the bottom of the third inning scoring three runs to take a 3-1 lead. Unfortunately, Del Tech would score nine unanswered runs to blow open the game 10-4 when it was all said and done.
Delaware Tech Game 2:
CSM would respond strongly to win their first game of the season 10-9. CSM took an early 6-0 lead entering the fourth inning. D-Tech would score two runs in the 4th and CSM added 4 runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to make it 10-2. Del Tech added 7 runs the rest of the way while the Hawks offense would slow down going blank. Closer Yunior Pena would earn his first save of the season for the Hawks, fending off Del Tech's late comeback.
Next up, CSM would be swept in a tripleheader against the Rowan College South Jersey Gloucester Roadrunners on February 17th - February 18th at home.
Rowan Roadrunners Game 1:
The Roadrunners shut out CSM 10-0 in the opening game. The Hawks batters would struggle only mustering two hits and striking out ten times. CSM's pitchers would surrender a combined total of ten total runs, eight earned runs, nine walks, a homerun and struck out four batters.
Rowan Roadrunners Game 2:
CSM's batters would struggle once again to produce only two hits and one run in the game. As Rowan's two home run blasts would help lead them to their 8-1 victory over the Hawks.
Rowan Roadrunners Game 3:
Despite losing this final game of the series, CSM did not quit in the 8-3 loss against the Roadrunners. CSM's Batters would produce five hits, three runs, two RBIs, and three walks. Led by first baseman Tyree Claxton who had a multi-hit and two RBIs game. Pitchers Chase Bart and Davey Reynolds struck out a combined eight batters, walked two batters, and surrendered eight total runs of which five were earned. Despite what the statistics said the pitchers were solid with their control at the mound and were able to get the ball in the spots they were looking for throughout the game.
Key Players / Stats:
- Infielder Cody Cox currently leads the team in batting average at (.385) and hits (4).
- The Hawks have done a great job drawing 24 walks in this 5-game stretch.
- Infielder Yunior Pena leads the team with (4) RBIs.
- Pitcher Chase Barts has pitched the most innings so far with 9 and has started in two games; striking out 8 batters to go along with a 3.00 ERA.
- Dave Reynolds has earned the first win of the season for this pitching group and Yunior closing out the first save as well.
