Hawks Take Pride in Victory over Lions

The College of Southern Maryland Hawks beat the CCBC Dundalk Lions on December 7 by a score of 94-78 to earn their fourth win of the season.

At the end of this game, one of the teams had to see their losing streaks continue; CSM had lost three games in a row while CCBC Dundalk was on a five-game skid.

Thanks to impressive scoring performances from sophomore guard Jerome Savoy and freshman guard Jason Newman, the Hawks were able to get back on the winning path. Savoy finished with a season-high 34 points off of 12-22 shooting from the field, 5-11 from 3-point range, and a perfect 5-5 from the free-throw line. Newman had 33 points, shooting 11-22 from the field and 7-11 from beyond the arc.

"Making threes in today's basketball game is the key to offense. We were able to get a couple stops in a row mixed with two or three threes and that score doubles up quick," CSM head coach Alan Hoyt said.

The Hawks had seven steals and two blocks on the night. CCBC Dundalk managed to steal the ball from CSM only twice.

Even though he didn't add any numbers to those defensive totals in the stat sheet, freshman guard Kyle McAllister contributed mightily on the defensive end for the Hawks. When picking up the ball handler, McAllister often played tight to the opposing player, not allowing them much space or time to think about what to do with the ball and causing them to quickly pass to another teammate or commit a turnover.

"Kyle is a great kid and a guy that needs more playing time. He works his butt off. He was cold from the field tonight but out on the floor he does a great job, he gets to the right spots and he fights," Hoyt said.

The Hawks were also able to take advantage of a poor shooting night from CCBC Dundalk. The Lions only 5-27 (18.5 percent) from 3-point range and 33-85 from the field (38.8 percent).

CSM improved their record to 4-9 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
