Men's Basketball Held Down by Cecil

The College of Southern Maryland Hawks men's basketball team suffered their fifth loss in a row on February 8, losing to the Cecil College Seahawks 102-81.

Cecil jumped out to a 17-3 lead in the first four minutes of the game, but CSM cut the lead to seven to bring the score to 25-18 with 10:45 remaining in the first half.

The Hawks continued working their way back into the game, tying the score at 30 after sophomore Warrick Godwin hit two consecutive 3-pointers with eight minutes to go in the half. Another basket by Godwin less than 30 seconds later gave CSM their first lead of the game, 32-31.

Cecil regained a 10-point advantage when they rattled off three 3-pointers with less than two minutes remaining in the half before going into the break up 56-47.

Cecil started the second half the same way they opened the game, going on an 18-3 tear over the first five minutes to jump ahead 74-50. CSM struggled to get the game back to within striking distance, as the Seahawks' lead ballooned to 30 points where it hovered the rest of the way.

CSM's record is now 11-14 overall, 3-7 in Maryland JUCO, and 4-9 in Region XX.

Freshman Armon Williams led the Hawks in scoring with 20 points as he came off the bench. He shot 5-10 from the floor, 3-4 from behind the 3-point line, and 7-10 from the free-throw line. He also grabbed seven rebounds and made one assist.

Godwin scored 14 points off 5-10 shooting, including going 4-7 from beyond the arc. Freshman Devin Thomas and sophomore Lelan Eackles provided 12 points each; Thomas grabbed a team-high nine rebounds to go along with two assists and two steals, and Eackles had six rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and a steal. Freshman Desha Curtis also had a double-digit scoring night, finishing with 11 points, three assists, and two rebounds.

The Hawks will enjoy a break after playing six games over 13 days before returning to action on Sunday, February 16, when they travel to Thomas Nelson Community College.
