Hawks Handle Hagerstown

The College of Southern Maryland women's basketball team beat Hagerstown Community College 76-66 on January 22.

CSM came out of the gates hot offensively, outscoring Hagerstown 21-8 in the first quarter. Hagerstown made one free throw to open the scoring, but CSM then went on a 7-0 run. After Hagerstown converted two more free throws, CSM maintained their rhythm, scoring 14 unanswered points to go up 21-3.

Both teams scored 15 points in the second quarter, giving CSM a 36-23 lead at halftime.

Hagerstown found their footing in the third quarter, outscoring CSM 22-14. They used a 10-0 run to get the score to within five at 46-41. CSM still held a five-point lead at the end of the third quarter, 50-45.

CSM was able to hold off Hagerstown the rest of the way with a 26-21 fourth quarter to pick up their second conference win of the season.

Freshman Karalina Lawrence was CSM's leading scorer for the night, finishing with 17 points. She also grabbed four rebounds and made one assist.

Freshman Virginia Houston scored a season-high 12 points, shooting 5-8 from the floor and 2-4 from behind the 3-point line. She also collected four rebounds and made one block.

Freshman Chenice Lewis picked up 11 points, three rebounds, and a steal. Sophomore Amaya Yancey added nine points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals, and a block.

CSM's bench offered much-needed depth, providing 18 points compared to Hagerstown's seven.

CSM's next game is January 24 at Harford Community College at 5 p.m.
