Hawks Use Second-Half Comeback to Beat Potomac State
The College of Southern Maryland women's basketball team picked up a much-needed Region XX victory on February 3, coming from behind to beat the WVU Potomac State College Catamounts 82-77.
After being down 45-36 at halftime, CSM started the second half on a 13-2 run to grab their first lead of the game at 49-47. Potomac State regained the lead and held onto it until freshman Makenzie Wilson hit a 3-pointer with 1:16 remaining in the game to put the Hawks up 76-75. CSM held Potomac State to only one more field goal the rest of the way to give the Hawks their fourth Region XX win.
"I said it this year going into it, Division II Region XX is going to be tough," CSM head coach Ardell Jackson said. "You can't have any days off, no matter who you play. We needed this win, and I know the girls knew they needed this win to keep us in the hunt to try and jump ahead of some of these teams that are ahead of us down the stretch. Our whole thing is, we said it's playoff atmosphere basketball at this point. We have to look at every game as a playoff game, we have to try to keep advancing ourselves up the ladder."
Freshman Karalina Lawrence was the leading scorer for CSM with 23 points. She also grabbed 17 rebounds to notch her 11th double-double of the season. Lawrence is currently averaging a double-double on the season with 19.6 points per game and 11.9 rebounds per game.
Sophomore Amaya Yancey was one assist shy of recording a triple-double, finishing with 20 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists.
Wilson provided 15 points off the bench for the Hawks as she went 5-7 from behind the 3-point line. Freshman Chenice Lewis added 13 points, as well as six rebounds, six assists, and three steals.
The Hawks will have another opportunity to pick up another Region XX win when they face Anne Arundel Community College February 5 at 5 p.m. at CSM.
