Women's Volleyball Tames Howard Dragons

The College of Southern Maryland Hawks women's volleyball team tamed the Howard Community College Dragons 3-0 on October 4 in Columbia, Maryland.

CSM won the sets 25-22, 25-22, 26-24.

The Hawks built up a 15-10 lead in the first set, but Howard went on a 7-0 run to go ahead 17-15. It was back and forth the rest of the way until CSM scored four unanswered points to end the first set.

The second set was evenly contested all the way through until the end again when CSM scored five straight points to win the set and take a 2-0 advantage in the match.

The Hawks fell into a 14-5 hole in the third set, but went on a 4-0 run to keep close to the Dragons at 14-9. CSM again got behind 17-11, but scored three points to inch closer to Howard at 17-14. Down 19-16, CSM went on another 4-0 run to take their first lead of the set at 20-19 since opening the set up 1-0. Howard and CSM then traded 3-0 runs to put the Hawks ahead 23-22. The two teams exchanged points until CSM scored the final two to win their second consecutive match. 

Freshman outside hitter Ellyssa Fultz led the Hawks in kills and digs with 12 and 14, respectively. Freshman setter/right side hitter Lillian Reynolds provided a game-high 30 assists.

Sophomore middle blocker Trinity Barrett had a solid all-around game with seven kills, five digs, two service aces, and a block assist. Sophomore outside hitter Janiyah Brand chipped in six kills, 13 digs, and a service ace.

Freshman libero Alyssa Powell made 12 digs, and freshman middle blocker Benia Morton added three kills and CSM's only solo block.

The Hawks are now 9-6 overall and 5-3 in Region 20 Division II.
